Recommended websites, books, films and other resources
There are countless resources out there for glbtq youth and families, and even more glbtq-themed books and movies, fiction and non-fiction. Here's just a few of our favorites.
GLBTQ: The Survival Guide for Queer & Questioning Teens. Book full of useful tips and down-to-earth advice for glbtq teens. Kelly Huegel, Free Spirit Press, 2011.
The New Gay Teenager. An optimistic and up-to-date book (2005) about the current lives of gay teens, often told in their own words. Ritch C. Savin-Williams, Harvard University Press.
Like Me. Autobiographical book of Chely Wright, a lesbian country music singer from small town Missouri detailing her struggles with lesbianism, her near-suicide, and her struggles to reconcile the messages of her upbringing with her own self awareness.
The Lavender Scare. This new film is to be released in Summer, 2012, and is the first major film to describe the U.S. government's persecution of gays during the McCarthy era.
Red without Blue. Film about a family dealing with a transgender identical twin as one, a boy named Alex, transitions to a woman named Clair. Available through Netflix or online booksellers.
For the Bible Tells Me So. Non-fiction film that describes the impact of religion on glbtq issues and through the stories of several families, describes how religion, the Bible, and glbtq acceptance go hand-in-hand.
Prayers for Bobby. Based on a true story, this film stars Sigourney Weaver as the religiously conservative mother of a gay boy. She comes to terms with his homosexuality only after he kills himself.
Milk. An Academy Award-winning film starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the country.
Bullied. The true story of Jamie Nabozny, a boy who was bullied for being gay and who fought back against the school that allowed it all to happen. He won in a landmark case that told administrators that they could be held responsible for not maintaining a safe environment.
